America was going through a lot of changes in the 50s and 60s that I personally didn't live through, BUT it was So recent everything spilled over into my childhood. Before the Beatles there was church music, classical (operas by Beethoven, Bach, etc), blues, funk, jazz, big band and swing, country and western and rock and roll. Times were simpler. People were polite and friendly, well mostly. Going to concerts, for example, meant you put on your suit while your girl dressed up (demurely) and you'd sit politely listening to the music before applauding. The Beatles ended that. As you see in the video women went freaking nuts. There is news footage of the band being chased by mobs of female fans simply because the went walking out on the streets. Their life experiences were the backbone of the music in a way noone else's had been and people strongly reacted to it. The biggest change occurred after they went to India. Experimentalism exploded hard in their music and propelled the band in ways never seen before. This launched the psychedelic music scene which in turn lead to hard rock, heavy metal and eventually punk rock. The eighties brought new wave, the strengthening of punk and towards the end of it alternative rock hit the national music scene (there had been underground movements, pirate rock radio stations playing things not beloved by the censors of America, but it wasn't terribly popular, noticed or liked by mainstream America) and rap and hip hop. Cursing and many topics were off limits for the radio such as drug use, sex, etc. So people had to use code words or change the vocabulary of what was in their songs to get their work on the air. Most of the artists of the 50s and 60s publicly and privately rebelled at these restrictions, including of course...the Beatles. In addition being gay was a mental disease that could be treated with therapy and cured. Nationally gay men could be beaten just for the crime of being gay with few, if any, repercussions. The Beatles and Aerosmith chipped away at these attitudes which emboldened Melissa Ethridge to out herself during an interview leading to acceptance of gays today, well....more than there was back then. During all this technology was cutting edge, but primitive by todays standards. Things that artists take for granted as ALWAYS being this way hadn't been invented. Musical techniques and technology had to BE invented. The Beatles figured out looping, by hand, by taking tapes of their sessions and cutting the tape and spicing it by hand to get the effects they wanted and needed....amongst a great many other things. Before the Beatles concerts were ALWAYS performed in clubs where you Could get a coupla hundred people into the venue, but no more than that. They were the first band to sell enough tickets to play in a stadium. The first band to sell out a stadium. I am not a recording/sound engineer so I don't know the whole of what the Beatles forced their guys to come up with. I just know the end result. Guys wearing long hair, casual dress confused and antagonized the older generations as the world reshaped itself. Towards the end of the bands existence they would play roof top concerts from their private label Apple Records (another first). Before this the Record Labels had a virtual monopoly on record studios and ways of doing things. The final concert that you saw in your previous video WAS the final rooftop concert because it disrupted traffic as the world would stop to listen to them play. The influence of the Beatles cannot be understated. Bands of the 80s cited them as an influence. Later bands cite the 80s bands without realising the Beatles influence in their own works. I hope this minor dissertation helps you and others with understanding how things came to be for you guys. I hope you keep listening to the Beatles. It'll be a fun voyage of discovery if you do.
